The Women's Fund
of the Fond du Lac Area Foundation

Our Mission Statement
The Women's Fund of the Fond du Lac Area Foundation effects positive change in the lives of women by developing and providing funding, engaging women in philanthropy, and creating understanding of the strengths and challenges of women in our community.

What is the Women's Fund?

The Women's Fund, established 2004, is a permanent endowment under the administration of the Fond du Lac Area Foundation.  The income earned by the fund is distributed as grants to 501 (c)(3) non profit organizations to fund programs that will benefit the women and girls of this community in the areas of education, leadership development, and financial self-sufficiency.

Why was the Women's Fund established?

In 2009, a Wisconsin woman with a high school education earned 75¢ for every $1 earned by her male counterpart.  Women in Wisconsin are less likely than women nationally to own a business or hold a college degree.  Women are underrepresented in Wisconsin’s Congressional delegation, where out of 11 representatives only 2 are women, and do not fare much better in the State Legislature.

Jobs for women continue to be concentrated in occupations with low wages and without benefits like health coverage or pensions. Although women make up less than 50% of the workforce in Wisconsin, they make up 55% of the state’s working poor, those whose household earnings are below the federal poverty level.  One third of single mother households live in poverty.

Despite these discouraging statistics, less than 6% of overall foundation giving funds grants targeted to benefit women and girls.

The Women’s Fund was established to provide a permanent resource in our community to address serious challenges facing women and girls, to empower Fond du Lac area women moved by this cause to become philanthropists, and to increase community understanding of issues uniquely affecting women and girls.

What programs does the Women's Fund support?

The Women’s Fund will consider awarding grants to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations for programs targeted to benefit Fond du Lac area women and/or girls in the areas of education; leadership development; or financial self-sufficiency.

How is the Women's Fund different from other community programs for women?

The Women’s Fund is not a club, program or service organization.  As a permanent endowment fund, it will bring about positive change in the lives of women and girls in our community for many years to come.  It also engages women in philanthropic giving and creates community understanding of the issues and challenges faced by Fond du Lac area women of all ages.
